The Plaza

The Plaza is designed as the city’s central gathering place – a vibrant public realm that reflects Kenya’s natural richness and cultural identity. The landscape concept celebrates indigenous biodiversity through curated gardens featuring native plant species selected for their resilience, colour, and distinctive character.

A dedicated coffee garden acknowledges the site’s plantation heritage while contributing to Tatu City’s broader tourism and destination strategy. The plaza also includes a play landscape, developed in collaboration with Kikuyu elders, ensuring that local knowledge and cultural values are meaningfully embedded in the design.

At the heart of the plaza stands the Mugumo tree, a sacred fig of profound cultural and spiritual significance to the Kikuyu community. Its recent planting marks the first step in bringing this landmark civic space to life—anchoring the plaza in heritage while shaping a shared place for future generations.
