Tatu City certifies 500 skilled workers through NCA accreditation
ed-use Special Economic Zone in Kiambu County, has successfully concluded a National Construction Authority (NCA) accreditation exercise, certifying 500 skilled workers and site supervisors. This milestone underscores Tatu City’s unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards in building safety, quality, and compliance with Kenya’s construction regulations.
The week-long accreditation covered Tatu City’s technical staff and construction professionals at Tatu Industrial Park, Kijani Ridge, and Unity Homes. Workers, including masons, electricians, plumbers, painters, welders, carpenters, and supervisors, underwent rigorous evaluation to meet NCA’s technical and safety benchmarks.
Speaking during the inauguration of the exercise, Eng. Julius Muchiri, Regional Coordinator for NCA Kiambu County, said, “This effort sets a benchmark for the construction industry. By prioritizing accreditation, Tatu City ensures a safer, more compliant building environment, serving as a model for other developers.”
Kenya’s construction sector faces ongoing challenges, including non-compliance with building codes, use of unqualified personnel, and corruption—factors contributing to the collapse of numerous buildings. An NCA audit recently found over 70% of inspected buildings unsafe, highlighting the urgent need for adherence to safety and quality standards.
“At Tatu City, quality and safety are non-negotiable. This accreditation program not only enhances the skills of our workforce but also ensures that every structure we build stands the test of time,” added Onesmus Kinyua, Lead Clerk of Works at Tatu City.
Tatu City’s holistic approach integrates health, safety, and compliance as essential pillars of its development strategy. Currently, 26,400 people live, work, or study within the city, which exemplifies sustainable urban living.
Tatu Industrial Park, East Africa’s largest private light industrial zone, hosts 88 companies operational or under construction. Meanwhile, Kijani Ridge, Kenya’s premier neighbourhood, has over 100 homes under development, each employing multiple contractors. Unity Homes, a leading property developer in Kenya, has over 700 housing units under construction catering to the growing demand for modern affordable housing in Tatu City.
The NCA accreditation assures developers and contractors that all construction workers and site supervisors at Tatu City possess the requisite technical expertise and adhere to safety regulations, fostering a safer, more reliable construction environment.
